Mourn and Play at Heritage Square Museum
Heritage Square Celebrates the Spooky Season with its Popular Mourning Tours Oct. 27, 28;
and Family-Friendly Halloween Tours Oct. 28

LOS ANGELES – It’s 1918, there’s been a death in the family and you are invited to the funeral. Will you cry? What will you wear? Will you attempt to contact the dearly departed?

Get the answers as you join the funeral party and see how Edwardians grieved their dead at Heritage Square Museum’s popular Mourning Tours from noon – 4pm on October 27 and 28, 2018.  Throughout the weekend, funeral-goers will be immersed in mourning etiquette, participate in a reenactment ceremony inside a historic home and other activities including:

  • The year is 1918 and that means the Spanish Flu is wreaking havoc! Will you defy the gathering bans to attend the funeral? Or, if you are deemed “sick,” what will you discover as you are escorted into a flu-ridden home?
  • Learn about the turn-of-the-century movement of Spiritualism and the lure of séances complete with a reenactment and a discussion on the “tricks of the trade.”
  • Experience a re-creation of Phantasmagoria, a phenomenon that shocked and exhilarated its Victorian audiences.
  • Discover the dangers associated with turn-of-the-century beauty at an eye-opening exhibition.
  • Could a charismatic leader of a 1920s cult convince you to join them?

In addition to the above activities, a more family-friendly program takes place only on Sunday Oct. 28. Halloween Tours welcome children ages 2-12 to play period games, make 19th century inspired crafts, choose a pumpkin for the pumpkin patch (while supplies last) and trick or treat at each of the museum’s buildings.

The Fifteenth Annual Mourning Tours and the Halloween Tours are noon – 4 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and are free with museum admission: $20 for adults, $15 for museum members and seniors over 65, $8 for children 6 to 12 years, and free for children under 6.

For more information about Halloween and Mourning Tours, call the museum offices from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (323) 225-2700 ext. 223.
