Where History Comes Alive!

Message from the President

Dear Members & Friends:

What a year! I have been involved with Heritage Square Museum for well over 10 years and can’t remember a time when so much was happening…

  • The roof of the historic Hale House received a well deserved make-over. As the jewel of the Heritage Square collection, protecting this classic Queen Anne-Eastlake home was a top priority for the museum and a long-time goal. Thank you to everyone who donated to ensure the structure would be safe for another 25 years.

  • Phase I of the Victorian Fence Project  was completed, providing a new entrance worthy of our Victorian-era structures.  With the support of the local Neighborhood Council, Phase II will soon follow, extending the brickwork and iron fencing toward the Arroyo Seco side of the cul-de-sac.

  • Jessica Rivas was hired in September to direct A Golden Vision: The Growth of Southern California helping bring living history to underprivileged schools in our area. Already, six schools have signed up for this free program in 2008 and articles praising the program have been written in many publications, including a complementary article in the United Teachers of Los Angeles newsletter.

  • Exterior restoration work was completed on the Lincoln Avenue Methodist Church (the first in over 20 years) and soon we will begin exterior work on the Mt. Pleasant Home.

  • Popular events, such as Silent Movie Nights, Museums of the Arroyo Day, Vintage Fashion Show and Tea, and the Holiday Lamplight Celebration returned, while new events such as our Father’s Day Antique and Vintage Automobile Show educated the public in new and interesting ways. Different exhibits, such as Well Done: the Story of Cookbooks and Commerce and The Long Road Home: The Story of Heritage Square provided fascinating looks at our history. With so much going on, is it any wonder Heritage Square Museum was voted the #1 museum in Los Angeles on Fox 11’s Hotlist?

In 2008, we hope to continue the museum’s progress with an impressive slate of projects that will make Heritage Square one of the premier living history destinations in Southern California. However, as an organization that receives almost no government funding, our progress is achieved only through the contributions of donors like you. Whether your gift is $10 or $10,000, whether you make an unrestricted gift or become a member, it is through your support that we are able to do the work that we do. Please, we ask that you give and give generously to help us continue to tell the story of how we went from a sleepy little pueblo to the bustling metropolis of today.

Sincerely,

Charles L. Horton
President
