A friend to Heritage Square Museum, Congressman Becerra asked us to announce a great opportunity for high school artists.

Since 1982, high school students have participated nationwide in the Congressional Student Art Competition. Students will have the chance to compete for an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to participate in a national ceremony as well as other prizes. The winning artist will also be a part of an elite group of students who will have their artwork exhibited in the United States Capitol for one year.

Please visit Congressman Becerra’s website at http://www.becerra.house.gov for details. You will find a video clip of last year’s first prize winner describing the experience as well as other important information like the competition guidelines and release form. Our theme is “Los Angeles: What does your community look like?” and the deadline for submission of art pieces is Friday, March 22, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

Dear Members and Supporters:

If you have ever wondered how *you* can make a direct impact on the direction of projects and programs at Heritage Square Museum (HSM), wonder no longer! This is your chance to be a part of the exciting changes and growth of *your* museum. All members in good standing, with all dues current, are encouraged to apply for the Board of Directors. And if your dues aren’t current, now is the time to rectify that situation so you can submit a nomination for yourself, another member, or an enthusiastic supporter who would like to jump in with both feet to help shape plans for HSM.

We invite you to nominate qualified and motivated individuals who are willing to be considered for election and to serve out the two-year term. We also encourage each member to consider serving as a Board member yourself to help HSM remain vital and prosperous. The attached form, including the nominator’s signature, must be received by February 18, 2013, in order for a nominee to be considered. The credentials of each nominee will be verified by the HSM Nominating Committee. Every nominator must be a member in good standing, and every nominee who accepts their selection must become a member at the Contributing (or higher) level.

Candidates should be aware of the time commitments of a Board member. Each term lasts two years with the possibility of reappointment. Board members attend a monthly Board meeting plus occasional sub-committee meetings. Attendance at a minimum number of events is required, with attendance at *all* major events encouraged. Financial contributions are at the Contributing level the first year of the Board term and at the Society level or above after the first year of Board service.

Candidates must be passionate about Heritage Square Museum’s mission, goals, and values. Experience with high-level decision-making and knowledge in areas such as public policy, marketing, business finance, fundraising, historical architecture, and volunteerism are desirable.

On behalf of the Heritage Square Museum Nominating Committee, we’d like to acknowledge past and current Board members and thank them for their dedication and service. We’d also like to acknowledge all who choose to run for the Board this year and thank everyone who participates in the election process. Best of luck to all the nominees!

Please use this link to download a nominating form: http://heritagesquare.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/HSMBoardMemberNominationForm21Jan2013Final.pdf

Thank you,

The Heritage Square Museum Nominating Committee

Dana Anderson

Due to rising operational, facility and event costs, the museum must moderately raise its membership levels beginning January 31. Museum membership prices have not increased in over a decade as we continue to make our program, events and member benefits affordable for everyone. In addition the museum has added two new membership levels: senior and student.

The membership changes are: Senior/Student-$30 (over 65/with valid college id) Individual-$40, Family-$60, Sustaining-$100, Contributing-$150. Heritage Square Society: Member-$250, Society-$500, Sponsor-$1,000, Patron-$2,500, Director’s Circle-$5,000.

These prices don’t take effect until the end of January, therefore we encourage everyone to renew or become a member now. New and renewing members may pay for their memberships online at the museum’s website. Go to the “Become a Member” web page and click the “Pay Now” button under each member level. You will be taken to a secure PayPal page to make your credit card payment.

We thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of the museum.
