Museum Where History Comes Alive! |
A Golden Vision: The Growth of Southern California® is designed for third and fourth grade students to promote historical and social literacy through architecture, art, literature, mathematics and living history exhibits. The program is constructed around the California Department of Education standards. A Golden Vision is one of only a few museum programs in Southern California that has a focus on what is referred to as “living history,” whereby the students have an opportunity to experience history hands on. The basic precept of this concept is “Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand." These living history activities serve as a foundation from which students, who otherwise have difficulties in the traditional methods of learning, can gain acceptance and understanding. Teachers participating in the program can choose from a twelve or fifteen day program. The program helps students understand cultural, social, economic and industrial changes in California, particularly Los Angeles, develop critical thinking, and instill community pride and an appreciation for art and local history. Included in the program are specially prepared comprehensive worksheets, journals, activities and assignments and resources that teachers use to instruct their class and prepare the students for an educational field trip to the museum. A volunteer will visit the classroom and read a selection from a literary publication. The finale of the program is a visit to the museum. There the class participates in a guided tour with a museum guide. The tour is designed to use the buildings and collections of the museum as a means of bringing the lessons to life. The students will view a video, enjoy the tour and then participate in period games, crafts and historical demonstrations. A final art project will be completed by the class and displayed in one of the homes at the museum. Program Funders Golden Vision Curriculum For Instructors
